PAG1: Power Adapter Generation 1

The PAG1 is a complete AC-DC power solution with an integrated USB Power Delivery (PD) controller that enables OEMs to build reliable, efficient, and cost-effective power adapters for the growing USB-C charger market. PAG1 is offered as a two-chip solution with a primary start-up controller (PAG1P) and a single-chip secondary-side controller (PAG1S) that integrates a synchronous rectification driver, PD controller, 30-V-tolerant regulator, high-voltage NFET gate drivers, OVP, SCP, and OCP protection. PAG1 is a secondary-side-controlled flyback solution that supports dynamically variable switching frequency thereby providing best-in-class efficiency and better reliability.

Cypress’ PAG1P is a primary start-up controller for AC/DC applications. It is designed to work with PAG1S in a secondary-controlled AC/DC flyback converter topology where-in the PAG1S device performs the voltage and current regulation, while PAG1P provides the start-up function, drives the primary FET and responds to fault conditions. PAG1P also supports X-cap discharge mode to achieve better efficiency.

Cypress’ PAG1S is a single-chip, secondary-side controller targeted towards mobile chargers that integrates a synchronous rectification driver, PD controller, and a wide range of protection circuits. The controller is flexibly designed to support a traditional primary-controlled flyback architecture, as well as a more-efficient secondary-controlled flyback architecture with a simple primary start-up controller. PAG1S helps you to design leading-class, high-performance mobile chargers at reduced BOM costs.

USB Type-C Specification

USB Type-C is the new USB-IF standard that solves several challenges faced by today's Type-A and Type-B cables and connectors. USB Type-C uses a slimmer connector (measuring only 2.4-mm in height) to allow for increasing miniaturization of consumer and industrial products. The specification allows for fully reversible plugs and enables transport of both USB signals and PCIe or DisplayPort signals on the same connector. The Type-C specification also increases the power delivery capability from 7.5 W to 100 W.
